Track Royal Mail packages

Royal Mail

Royal Mail is the United Kingdom's national postal service, handling letters and parcels through its delivery network across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. With a history spanning more than 500 years, Royal Mail combines its traditional postal role with modern parcel services designed for individuals, online shoppers and businesses throughout the UK.

Its domestic services cover different combinations of speed, Tracking and delivery confirmation. Royal Mail Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 provide tracking to the delivery point, while Royal Mail 1st Class and 2nd Class serve everyday letters and parcels. Royal Mail Signed For adds a signature and online delivery confirmation, and Special Delivery Guaranteed is intended for urgent or valuable shipments requiring full tracking and a next-working-day delivery guarantee, subject to the service's conditions and postcode exceptions.

Royal Mail operates an extensive national infrastructure that moves mail between distribution hubs, mail processing centres and local delivery offices around the United Kingdom. Customers can also access services through Post Office branches, Royal Mail Shops, Customer Service Points, postboxes and parcel lockers. Depending on the service, postage can be purchased online through Click & Drop, and eligible parcels can be collected from the sender's address through Parcel Collect.

For recipients, tracked Royal Mail services provide a clearer view of a package as it progresses toward delivery. Some services can also provide delivery notifications, photos on delivery, delivery confirmation and options such as delivery to a Safeplace or preferred neighbour. The exact features available depend on the service purchased by the sender.

How to Track Royal Mail packages

To Track a Royal Mail shipment with 4Tracking, enter the tracking number supplied by the sender, retailer or Royal Mail into the tracking field and start the search. 4Tracking is a universal package tracking website, making it useful when you want to follow shipment updates from one place rather than repeatedly checking separate carrier pages.

Once Royal Mail has received and scanned a trackable item, Tracking information can be updated as the package moves through the carrier's network and eventually reaches the delivery stage. The amount of information shown depends on the service. Royal Mail Tracked 24, Tracked 48 and Special Delivery Guaranteed provide tracking through to the delivery point, whereas Royal Mail Signed For is not tracked throughout its entire journey and mainly provides confirmation and a signature after delivery.

You can also check the shipment directly through Royal Mail's official Track your item service. If no information appears, first verify that you entered the reference exactly as provided. If you are the recipient and still cannot find tracking information, Royal Mail advises contacting the sender, because the sender can confirm which postal service was used and make enquiries when necessary.

Royal Mail tracking number formats

Royal Mail's published tracking-link guidance verifies a 13-character tracking-number structure consisting of two characters, followed by nine digits, and ending with the letters GB. In pattern form, this can be represented as AA123456789GB, where the first two characters vary by shipment.

Official Royal Mail examples include ZW924750388GB and SG577041359GB. Royal Mail's guidance also distinguishes its references from certain prefixes used for Parcelforce services, so a number belonging to another carrier within the wider postal system should not automatically be treated as a Royal Mail tracking number.

Royal Mail uses references across several products and label types, but its public guidance does not provide a complete text specification covering every possible current reference used by every service. For reliable package tracking, enter the number exactly as printed on the postage label, receipt, dispatch email or order details instead of modifying its prefix or adding characters.

Royal Mail delivery times

Delivery time depends on the Royal Mail service selected, when the item enters the network, the destination postcode and whether weekends or bank holidays affect the journey. A delivery aim is not necessarily a guarantee; Special Delivery Guaranteed is the main service below that provides a next-working-day guarantee when its applicable conditions are met.

Royal Mail Tracked 24

Royal Mail Tracked 24 has a next working day delivery aim. For example, a qualifying parcel accepted on Monday would normally aim for delivery on Tuesday. This is an aim rather than a guaranteed delivery time, and Royal Mail notes that delivery aims may not apply to some postcodes.

Royal Mail Tracked 48

Royal Mail Tracked 48 aims to deliver in two to three working days. As an illustrative example, a parcel entering the network on Monday would generally aim to arrive around Wednesday or Thursday, assuming there is no bank holiday or other service disruption.

Royal Mail 1st Class

Royal Mail 1st Class aims to deliver letters and parcels on the next working day, including Saturdays. For example, an eligible item posted on Friday would normally have a Saturday delivery aim, although this service does not provide the same delivery guarantee as Special Delivery Guaranteed.

Royal Mail 2nd Class

Royal Mail 2nd Class has a delivery aim of within three working days. For example, an item entering the postal network on Monday would normally be expected within that three-working-day target rather than on a guaranteed specific date.

Royal Mail Signed For

Royal Mail Signed For 1st Class aims for the next working day, including Saturdays, while Signed For 2nd Class aims for delivery in two to three working days, including Saturdays. These services provide a signature and online delivery confirmation, but Signed For is not an end-to-end tracking service.

Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed

Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm can provide delivery by 1pm on the next working day when the item is posted by the applicable acceptance cut-off and the destination is covered by the standard guarantee. For example, an eligible package accepted at a Post Office on Monday before the required cut-off would normally be guaranteed by 1pm Tuesday. Some postcode areas have later delivery guarantees, and using Parcel Collect adds an extra working day to this particular guarantee. Royal Mail also offers Special Delivery Guaranteed by 9am with its own conditions and postcode restrictions.

How to contact Royal Mail about shipment issues

If your package tracking indicates a problem, start by checking the latest Tracking information on 4Tracking or Royal Mail's official website. Recipients should also contact the sender or retailer when appropriate, especially if the tracking reference is not recognised, the wrong service appears to have been supplied, or an item has not arrived. The sender normally has the postage details needed to make a formal enquiry or claim.

Customers without an Online Business Account can contact Royal Mail about an item they have sent or are expecting by calling 03457 740 740. Royal Mail currently lists advisor hours as 8:00am–6:30pm Monday to Friday, 8:00am–3:00pm Saturday and 9:00am–2:00pm Sunday. Royal Mail also provides an online Contact Us form, which can be used to reach the appropriate support team.

Online Business Account customers can contact the dedicated business team on 03457 950 950, with Royal Mail currently listing support hours of 8:00am–6:30pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am–3:00pm Saturday. Because contact hours and support arrangements can change, checking the current details on Royal Mail's official website before calling is recommended.

Frequently asked questions about Royal Mail package tracking issues

Why is my Royal Mail tracking number not working?

Check that the number has been copied exactly from the sender's dispatch message, receipt or postage label. Tracking may also depend on the service used. Royal Mail Signed For, for example, does not provide continuous tracking throughout the journey. If you are the recipient and the number still produces no information, ask the sender to verify the reference and the Royal Mail service used.

Why has my Royal Mail Tracking not updated?

A trackable package does not necessarily receive a new visible update continuously. There can be periods between recorded events while the item moves through Royal Mail's network. Check again later and compare the elapsed time with the delivery aim for the service. If the expected delivery period has passed, use Royal Mail's help guidance for delayed or missing items and contact the sender when appropriate.

Why does my Royal Mail package say delivered when I have not received it?

Check whether another person at the address accepted the package, and look in any nominated Safeplace or with a neighbour where applicable. For services that provide delivery evidence, Royal Mail Tracking may show additional delivery information such as a photo, signature or GPS-confirmed delivery information when available. If you still cannot locate the item, contact the sender and Royal Mail with the tracking reference.

Can I Track a Royal Mail Signed For package throughout its journey?

No. Royal Mail states that Signed For is not tracked throughout the journey. It provides online delivery confirmation and a signature after the item has been delivered. For end-to-end Tracking, services such as Royal Mail Tracked 24, Tracked 48 or Special Delivery Guaranteed are more appropriate.

Does Royal Mail Tracked 24 guarantee next-day delivery?

No. Tracked 24 has a next-working-day delivery aim, but it is not the same as a guaranteed next-day service and postcode exclusions can apply. Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed is designed for shipments requiring a delivery guarantee, subject to its service conditions.

What should I do if my Royal Mail package is late?

First identify the service used and compare the shipment's progress with its published delivery aim. Continue checking the tracking number through 4Tracking and Royal Mail. If the item has passed the relevant timeframe, contact the sender or retailer first where appropriate, since the sender can investigate the shipment and may need to submit any claim. You can also use Royal Mail's official help pages or customer-support channels for further assistance.

Can I change where a tracked Royal Mail package is delivered?

Eligible shipments may offer delivery changes through Royal Mail Track & Trace. Depending on the service and available options, this can include changing the delivery day, selecting a preferred neighbour, choosing a Safeplace, or directing the item to an eligible Post Office or Royal Mail location. The available choices depend on the shipment and service.
