Nigeria Post - NIPOST

NIPOST, the Nigerian Postal Service, is Nigeria's national postal authority and provides postal, parcel, courier and logistics services across the country. NIPOST traces its current organizational form to 1985 and operates under the supervision of the Federal Ministry responsible for communications. Its mandate includes collecting, sorting and delivering mail nationwide while maintaining postal facilities that make services accessible across Nigeria.

For package senders, NIPOST offers several courier and parcel products. EMS Parcel International provides express delivery of documents and merchandise to more than 200 destinations worldwide and supports express customs clearance for dutiable goods weighing up to 30 kg. Within Nigeria, EMS Parcel Domestic, also known as Speed Post, provides expedited nationwide delivery, while EMS Economy offers a lower-cost option for less urgent domestic packages.

NIPOST also provides Intra-City Service for documents and merchandise moving within the same city and Airpost Express for particularly fast transportation between selected airport towns. Beyond parcels, its network handles conventional mail, P.O. Boxes, Private Mail Bags, bulk mail, pickup services, e-commerce and logistics activities, as well as selected financial and agency services.

Shipment visibility is available through NIPOST's official Track & Trace system for supported items. Customers receive a Tracking ID for trackable mail, normally on the payment voucher or bar-coded receipt issued when the item is posted. Recipients can also use 4Tracking to Track NIPOST packages and follow available package tracking events alongside shipments from other postal and courier companies.

How NIPOST shipment tracking works

When a trackable item is accepted by NIPOST, its Tracking ID is associated with the shipment record. NIPOST states that the identifier is normally printed on the payment voucher or bar-coded receipt and corresponds with the bar-coded label attached to the postal item. Entering this identifier into a tracking system can show the latest recorded status and location.

To Track a NIPOST package with 4Tracking, enter the tracking number in the tracking field. Select NIPOST when necessary or allow 4Tracking to automatically detect the carrier, then press the Track button. The results page will display the package tracking events that are currently available for the shipment.

NIPOST also provides its own Track & Trace service for domestic and international items. Its current tracking interface allows customers to search using tracking, delivery-notice or reference numbers and can accept multiple tracking numbers separated by commas.

Not every postal item provides the same Tracking coverage. NIPOST explains that some ordinary items can be untrackable from their country of origin until they reach the delivery post office in the destination country. Temporary network downtime or an incorrectly entered Tracking ID can also prevent an item from appearing in the system.

NIPOST tracking number formats

NIPOST states that its Tracking IDs are alphanumeric, meaning they can contain both letters and numbers. The carrier does not publish one universal format on its current FAQ that applies to every domestic, international and ordinary postal product.

The official NIPOST Track & Trace page uses NP123456789NG and NP987654321NG as tracking examples. These identifiers contain two letters, followed by nine digits and the country suffix NG. This demonstrates a supported format used by NIPOST's tracking system, but it should not be interpreted as proof that every NIPOST shipment must begin with NP or use exactly the same structure.

NIPOST's collection guidance also refers to providing an item's 9-digit Tracking ID when collecting a parcel. Because NIPOST handles different classes of domestic and international mail, customers should use the complete identifier exactly as shown on the receipt, shipping label or notification rather than altering it to match another shipment.

NIPOST delivery times and supported examples

Delivery time depends on the NIPOST product, route and destination. For domestic EMS Parcel or Speed Post, NIPOST's current EMS service page advertises a 24-hour delivery window to more than 600 post offices across Nigeria. Its broader service standards provide more detailed Speed Post targets of approximately 12 hours for intra-state mail, 24 hours for major city centres and 48 hours for commercial centres.

For less urgent domestic packages, EMS Economy has a published 48-hour delivery timeframe. This service is positioned as a budget-oriented option for shipments that do not require the faster Speed Post service.

NIPOST's Airpost Express service publishes a particularly fast six-hour delivery target between selected major airport towns. Its current EMS page specifically lists Abuja, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Benin and Calabar for this six-hour service. NIPOST's service standards additionally describe 12-hour delivery to commercial city centres and 24-hour delivery to commercial towns for Airpost Express, excluding weekends.

For conventional domestic mail, NIPOST's service standards list same-day delivery for intra-city items, approximately 24 hours for inter-city mail, two days within the same geographical region and around three to four days between regions, subject to the conditions stated for the service.

International EMS delivery does not have one universal timeframe covering every country. NIPOST's published service standards list reference periods of approximately 8–10 working days for Lagos and Abuja, 8–12 working days for South-West states, and 10–13 working days for South-East, South-South and Northern states. NIPOST notes that international EMS timing is affected by customs checks, destination-country import requirements, delivery partners and airline availability, so these published windows should be treated as service standards rather than unconditional guarantees.

How to contact NIPOST about shipment issues

If Tracking has stopped updating, the tracking number does not work or a package appears delayed, first keep the complete Tracking ID and posting receipt available. NIPOST specifically asks customers reporting delivery or arrival problems to provide shipment information that can help identify the item.

NIPOST's current official contact page lists support@nipost.gov.ng and customerservice@nipost.gov.ng for enquiries and complaints. General enquiries can also be sent to info@nipost.gov.ng. Customers can submit an enquiry through the official website or use NIPOST's grievance-redress process for formal complaints.

For a lost, damaged or tampered package, NIPOST advises reporting the issue at the delivery post office or through its online complaint channels. Customers should provide the tracking information, details of the item and relevant evidence when applicable. NIPOST's corporate headquarters is at Abubakar Musa Argungu House, Plot 1279 Muhammadu Buhari Way, Garki, Abuja, Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions about NIPOST package tracking issues

Why is my NIPOST tracking number not working?

Check the Tracking ID carefully and enter every letter and number exactly as shown on the receipt or shipment notification. NIPOST identifies an invalid Tracking ID and temporary network downtime as possible reasons a parcel cannot be tracked. Some ordinary postal items may also have limited Tracking until they reach the destination delivery office.

What does a NIPOST tracking number look like?

NIPOST describes its Tracking IDs as alphanumeric. Its official tracker uses NP123456789NG as an example, showing two letters followed by nine digits and NG. NIPOST does not state that this exact pattern applies to every service, so always use the complete identifier supplied for your own package.

Where can I find my NIPOST Tracking ID?

NIPOST states that the Tracking ID is normally printed on the payment voucher or bar-coded receipt issued at the post office when the item is sent. The same identifier corresponds with the bar-coded label attached to the postal item.

Why has my NIPOST package tracking stopped updating?

A shipment can spend time moving between postal facilities without receiving a new visible scan. International packages may also be undergoing transportation, customs checks or processing by the destination postal operator. Continue monitoring the Tracking information and contact NIPOST if the delay becomes significantly longer than the relevant service standard.

How long does NIPOST Speed Post take?

NIPOST's current EMS page advertises a 24-hour delivery window to more than 600 post offices for domestic EMS Parcel or Speed Post. Its detailed service standards distinguish between routes, listing 12 hours for intra-state mail, 24 hours for major city centres and 48 hours for commercial centres.

How long does NIPOST Economy delivery take?

NIPOST publishes a 48-hour timeframe for EMS Economy. It is designed for non-urgent domestic items that do not require the faster service level of regular Speed Post.

Can I Track several NIPOST packages together?

Yes. NIPOST's current Track & Trace page allows multiple tracking numbers to be entered together when separated by commas. You can also use 4Tracking to follow NIPOST packages together with shipments handled by other carriers.

Why can an international NIPOST package take longer than the published timeframe?

International delivery can be affected by customs inspection, import requirements in the destination country, airline availability and processing by the destination postal operator. NIPOST specifically identifies these factors in its EMS service standards, so international transit periods should not be treated as guaranteed arrival dates.

What should I do if my NIPOST package is lost or damaged?

Report the problem to NIPOST and provide the Tracking ID, a description of the shipment and evidence of damage when applicable. NIPOST states that a formal lost or damaged mail report can trigger an investigation. You can report the issue at the relevant post office or through NIPOST's official customer-service and complaint channels.

Can 4Tracking change the delivery address or investigate a NIPOST package?

No. 4Tracking provides package tracking information but does not transport or control NIPOST shipments. Delivery changes, claims, investigations and other shipment-specific requests must be handled by NIPOST or, when appropriate, by the sender.
